Even for many who simply work out strictly for the health benefits, the standing overhead press is an excellent exercise to carry out.
It’s one of those total-body movements, involving everything from the neck down to the ankles.
No, really!
Legs, arms, your torso – they’ve all got to help move the weight up and keep it up.
Just a quick run-down of all the actors involved would comprise a what’s-what of gym favorites: abs,
lats, traps, all three deltoid heads, spinae erectors and hips and quads and much, much more.

Unless, of course, you do the seated edition, which is really not suggested due to the likely compression of vetebrae – for which no amount of athletic tape will ever help!
Additionally, the lower body would not be required any more, effectively reducing the intensity of the exercise by at least half.
Indeed, with enough reps and poundage, the overhead press can almost approach the cardiovascular!

Speaking of which, combine the standing overhead press with the power clean for a enormous dose of heart health – especially when done for every rep and not just at the start of each set.
But that’s not all – you can improve the intensity still further by not basically dropping the bar at the end of the rep or set but bringing down it under control back onto the floor!
This will really get your procedure going.

It’s a fantastic exercise, and not much is really needed – just clips to hold the weight plates in place on the bar and perhaps athletic tape to wrap around important joints like knees and wrists.
Some people use a weight belt but it’s arguable that learning to perform the movement “naturally” is more advantageous.
Certainly those who exercise recreationally instead of competitively should not need any such specialized equipment.
No reason to get too technical; the standing overhead press is as straight-forward as it looks: just lift it over your head!

Of Athletic Tape and the Military Press

The overhead press utilized to rank among the most common of strongman exercises, and was without a doubt an event in itself in the Olympics ahead of the ’70s when it had been delisted.
It is hardly seen anywhere today as a result of some bad press (no pun planned) over the degree of danger native to the movement.
There is however nothing as viscerally exciting as lifting a bar with “full” plates on either side straight up over one’s head.
It’s visually striking like nothing else: obviously heavy weight over the head, a statement in itself – elegant, majestic, and (often) silent.

It’s not just the athletic tape many guys wear on their wrists – the very joints upon which the weight first, most directly, rests.
It’s the whole package: initially, the eye can’t even decide know where to focus.
With something like the bench press, arguably America’s favorite lift lately, your view quickly and quite naturally falls onto the upper-body area.
With the overhead press, one is more likely to scan in amazement from top to bottom, intuitively searching for signs of weakness such as buckling knees and an overarched back.

All of which is to accept that so much more is required of a successful overhead press.
Certainly, athletic tape will probably be discovered wrapping the knees as well, especially when the overhead press is preceded by a power clean.
The whole body is extremely required in the effective overhead press: hands and wrists, arms, shoulders, upper and lower back, not to mention the abs, hips, and legs, right down to the ankles and the toes on each foot!

Yes, there’s nothing that can match it.
Do more than one and it even approaches the cardiovascular – athletic tape or no!
Add the aforementioned power clean to every set – otherwise every rep – for a workout like no other.
